Cosey Fanni Tutti joined the art performance collective
COUM Transmissions in December 1969 after she was thrown out of the family house by her father. COUM were founded in Hull, by Neil Megson (later known as Genesis P-Orridge). Other core members of the collective were Peter Martin Christopherson and Chris Carter. They were influenced by the Dada movement and between 1969 and 1976 would challenge the established and often staid norms of British society.
Cosey moved to London in late 1973 where she began to explore sexuality as an art form. She started by working as a stripper, before moving on to pose for adult magazines. In 1975 she appeared in the first of three porn loops. She would also appear in a number of British sex comedies, including
Come Play With Me and
Playbirds, both starring
Mary Millington.

In 1976 COUM Transmissions disbanded. Chris, Cosey, Genesis and Peter went on to form the pioneering industrial band
Throbbing Gristle. By 1981 the band had run its course and Cosey then joined Chris Carter to form
Chris & Cosey. Over the next two decades they would release over a dozen albums and collaborate with artists as diverse as Coil, Erasure, Eurythmics and Robert Wyatt.
Cosey and Chris are still partners and have a son.
